God’s power. Our prayer.
It is often said that there is power in prayer. However, I’d like to propose that the power doesn’t lie in our prayers at all, but in God to whom we pray.
You see, many belief systems of the world believe in prayer. Some 'pray' to dead relatives or structures made by man. Others believe that prayer can only be made while facing a certain direction at certain times of the day.
While I have pure love for all people—no matter what their belief system—the reality is that prayers outside of those made to God (El Shama—God who hears) are futile. When we pray to God through Jesus Christ, we are guaranteed a response from Him. Prayer made to God with a genuine heart (Psalm 145:18), without doubting (Mark 11:24, James 1:6) and according to the will of God (1 John 5:14-15) will always cause Him to respond.
Much like the requests of a child move the heart of their parents to act, say or do something, our prayers touch the heart of our Father and, when made according to His principles, He responds.
Personally, I’ve found the greatest help, strength, and provision when I’ve decided to intentionally pour out my heart to God and talk to Him (i.e. pray—because prayer is quite literally talking God). Whether it’s telling Him exactly how I feel, how I’ve failed or simply praying His Word right back to Him, He always responds. He may not always respond right away or in a way that I would always want, but His responses are always laced with love and, frankly, exceed my expectations.
So, the next time you’re confused, worried, angry, in need of direction or provision, or just need to get something off your chest—pray. Pray to God in faith through Jesus Christ knowing that He hears, He cares, and He alone has the power to do anything.
P.S. Curious about this Christian life or interested in trying it out for yourself—God hears your prayers of repentance too! Although you can’t see Him in person, talk to God as you would a close friend and tell Him how you feel. Ask Him to forgive your wrongdoings (i.e. your sins), to come into your heart and life, and to make Jesus real to you. As you talk to Him and surrender to His love, He will respond. He may not respond audibly but He will put a nudge in your heart or send people (or things) your way to show you He’s listening.
